The state is divided into 72 municipalities and covers the Second national land area, with 9.2% of total Mexican territory.

The territory consists of four physiographic provinces: that of the Sierra Madre Occidental, Parallel Ranges and Valleys (also called Northern Plains), desert and coastline of the Gulf of California.

Origin and Development of Teachers and Education

Origin and Development of Public School in Sonora

Public School in Sonora has been greatly encouraged by the performance of three key characters in it, first the General Alvaro Obregon who recognized that through education and the teachers was how he could achieve social justice in the time when the Mexican Revolution was in full swing. Obregon met José Vasconcelos -another of our key people-and they realized that their views regarding this issue agree.

In 1920, Vasconcelos was appointed rector of the National University of Mexico, and since becoming president Obregón, giving their support, Vasconcelos support to indigenous communities constituting the Department of Indigenous Culture.

Then comes another character for governor of Sonora, Plutarco Elias Calles called , Pedagogue, military and political, who first, having started as a rural teacher, decides to support these communities through a decree for the construction of schools in this medium .

Later, in 1916 provides for the establishment or creation of the State Normal School in Sonora. Among his other accomplishments and contributions, driven from every angle especially rural education, peasants, indigenous, and especially its gold project, the Schools Cruz Gálvez.

Then comes another Sonoran, Abelardo L. Rodrgíguez, who continued the work of Obregon and Calles to support the Education Sonora. In 1921, just created the Secretariat of Public Education, a proposal of Ezekiel L. Chávez, author of the project, and convinces them offer the same Obregon and Vasconcelos, and the latter is the one who takes her in his hands the task of reviving the education system that previously had destroyed Carranza.

Through these and other events, and through these and many other characters is as public education originated in Sonora and developed to form what we know today.

Some characters that support education in Sonora

Álvaro Obregón, being a man ready and resources, could serve in several areas, including political, from where he launched some educational projects such as rural schools called Houses of the People, the Cultural Missions and Missionaries.

Plutarco Elias Calles, was acting governor and being the teacher, attended the rural education, for it ordered a decree to establish schools in all towns that have more than five hundred people , ordered the creation of the State Normal School in Sonora in 1916, promoted the education of peasants, indigenous people and the establishment of schools "Cruz Gálvez" for girls and boys. Launched the anti-alcohol ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrWj0W2eGpE ) and anti-clerical, in order to enforce secularism in state education. He also established the peasant unions, which led to the Rural School of the fifth.
