Sonora Sonora

THE STATE OF "SOUND"

Location

Located in the northwest region. It is known for its desert characteristics and its beaches. Its capital and largest city is Hermosillo.

There are two theories about the origin of the name Sonora, the first comes from Opata Xunuta, Place of corn, the second comes from the Tohono O'odham (Papago), Sonota, which means place of plants.

The state is divided into 72 municipalities and covers the Second national land area, with 9.2% of total Mexican territory.

The territory consists of four physiographic provinces: that of the Sierra Madre Occidental, Parallel Ranges and Valleys (also called Northern Plains), desert and coastline of the Gulf of California.

For the period 1980-2008, in the city live in the state 271,277 children under 5 years, 474,481 children between 5 and 14 years, 422,588 between 15 and 24 , 740,930 between 25 and 49 years, 307,693 adults aged 50 and older.
